William (Bill) H. Gates is chairman of Microsoft Corporation, the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential. Microsoft had revenues of US$51.12 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2007, and employs more than 78,000 people in 105 countries and regions.

On June 15, 2006, Microsoft announced that effective July 2008 Gates will transition out of a day-to-day role in the company to spend more time on his global health and education work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. After July 2008 Gates will continue to serve as Microsoft’s chairman and an advisor on key development projects. The two-year transition process is to ensure that there is a smooth and orderly transfer of Gates’ daily responsibilities. Effective June 2006, Ray Ozzie has assumed Gates’ previous title as chief software architect and is working side by side with Gates on all technical architecture and product oversight responsibilities at Microsoft. Craig Mundie has assumed the new title of chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft and is working closely with Gates to assume his responsibility for the company’s research and incubation efforts.

Born on Oct. 28, 1955, Gates grew up in Seattle with his two sisters. Their father, William H. Gates II, is a Seattle attorney. Their late mother, Mary Gates, was a schoolteacher, University of Washington regent, and chairwoman of United Way International.

Gates attended public elementary school and the private Lakeside School. There, he discovered his interest in software and began programming computers at age 13.

In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft's chief executive officer. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair.

In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the computer would be a valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers. Gates' foresight and his vision for personal computing have been central to the success of Microsoft and the software industry.

Under Gates' leadership, Microsoft's mission has been to continually advance and improve software technology, and to make it easier, more cost-effective and more enjoyable for people to use computers. The company is committed to a long-term view, reflected in its investment of approximately $7.1 billion on research and development in the 2007 fiscal year.

In 1999, Gates wrote Business @ the Speed of Thought, a book that shows how computer technology can solve business problems in fundamentally new ways. The book was published in 25 languages and is available in more than 60 countries. Business @ the Speed of Thought has received wide critical acclaim, and was listed on the best-seller lists of the New York Times, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and Amazon.com. Gates' previous book, The Road Ahead, published in 1995, held the No. 1 spot on the New York Times' bestseller list for seven weeks.

Gates has donated the proceeds of both books to non-profit organizations that support the use of technology in education and skills development.

In addition to his love of computers and software, Gates founded Corbis, which is developing one of the world's largest resources of visual information - a comprehensive digital archive of art and photography from public and private collections around the globe. He is also a member of the board of directors of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which invests in companies engaged in diverse business activities.

Philanthropy is also important to Gates. He and his wife, Melinda, have endowed a foundation with more than $28.8 billion (as of January 2005) to support philanthropic initiatives in the areas of global health and learning, with the hope that in the 21st century, advances in these critical areas will be available for all people. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed more than $3.6 billion to organizations working in global health; more than $2 billion to improve learning opportunities, including the Gates Library Initiative to bring computers, Internet Access and training to public libraries in low-income communities in the United States and Canada; more than $477 million to community projects in the Pacific Northwest; and more than $488 million to special projects and annual giving campaigns.

Gates was married on Jan. 1, 1994, to Melinda French Gates. They have three children. Gates is an avid reader, and enjoys playing golf and bridge.

Lesson 2 _ Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

Novelty >> 

Novelty (derived from Latin word novus for "new") is the quality of being new. Although it may be said to have an objective dimension (e.g. a new style of art coming into being, such as abstract art or impressionism) it essentially exists in the subjective perceptions of individuals.

It also refers to something novel; that which is striking, original or unusual. The term can have pejorative sense and refer to a mere innovation.

Creativity >> 

A creative person is a person who generate new ideas. A creative process is how these new ideas, solutions, and inventions produced. Creativity involves the translation of our unique gifts, talents, and vision into an external reality that is new and useful. It takes place unavoidably inside our own personal, social, and cultural boundaries.

The picture above shows that the creativity of the Japanese. They invented this butter stick. When you are racing against time, this butter stick will come handy. You do not have to use a butter knife and you can bring the butter stick with you because it is compact.

Creativity appears to be utilized in varying degrees by different people with different culture and backgrounds.

Innovation comes from the Latin innovātus which means to renew. Innovation can therefore be seen as the process that renews something that exists and not, as is commonly assumed, the introduction of something new.

Invention >> 

An invention is a new composition, device, or process. An invention may be derived from a pre-existing model or idea, or it could be independently conceived in which case it may be a radical breakthrough. In addition, there is cultural invention, which is an innovative set of useful social behaviors adopted by people and passed on to others.Inventions often extend the boundaries of human knowledge or experience. An invention that is novel and not obvious to others skilled in the same field may be able to obtain the legal protection of a patent.

First lesson of Creative Studies

Finally start our Creative Studies class 'normally'.

The first lesson, I learn about creative thinking and how to ask or answer creatively. For an example, same question can get many different answers even asking the same person.

 "What is the similarity of a lamp post and an elephant?".

This is one of the things that I think is interesting throughout the class.
The common answers get from our course mates are that they are in same color, high in height even the weight is answered.But, answers of lecturer are both of them aren't our friends and both of them can't talk. From this question, we can know that most of us still not have the creative thinking in minds. We are usually thinking inside the box and search for the answer around the same coverage and inside the same scheme.


Besides, we been taught the Myth of Creativity


Myth of Creativity :

1. Only special talented people are creative.
2. Being creative is hard.
3. Problems are in our life to make it more difficult (people who never suffer from difficult will never know happiness)
4. I am not creative.
5. Innovation is the domain of genius.
6. I have to have brand new ideas in order for me to be considered creative.
7. Brainstorming is hard work.
8. Only artists need to be creative.
9. Writer's block in greatest obstacle in creative process.
10. Using structured creative techniques will hinder my ability to be creative.

We are always answer or doing the same things that we know and had been taught. We seldom think of something special or thinking outside the box.This is what we must change and learn as we are part of the Creative Multimedia students.

Lets have a test :

Look at the picture at the left, concentrate on the movement of the women.

Do you see this women moving in Clockwise or Anti- clockwise?

If you see her moving CLOCKWISE, you are using your CREATIVE side of your brain, that is right brain.

If you see her moving ANTI-CLOCKWISE, you are using your LOGICAL part of your brain, that is left brain.

Here come week 3 - Introduction to Creative Studies

Well, do you know what is "Creative Studies" ?


Creative Studies is one of the humanities subjects that we need to take in Faculty Creative Multimedia Alpha year. As you know by its name, it is a study about creativity. A studies of "How to solve a problem creatively".


For your information, the objective of this subject is to develop student's ability to identify an issue or topic and from that carry out appropriate research, analysis and idea synthesis that will result in a unique, personal statement.

And so What is CREATIVITY ?


This is the formal answer that I can thought of :
Creativity is the ability to imagine or create something new, things that other people haven thought before. Creativity is not about create somethings out of nothing. Generate new ideas by combining, changing and reapplying existing idea is the best way to create. Creativity is being creative to create a creative things using our creative brain.

I define creativity as the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. Innovation is the production or implementation of an idea. If you have ideas, but don't act on them, you are imaginative but not creative.

Creativity is the bringing into being of something which did not exist before, either as a product, a process or a thought.

You would be demonstrating creativity if you: 

• Invent something which has never existed before
• Invent something which exists elsewhere but you are not aware of
• Invent a new process for doing something
• Reapply an existing process or product into a new or different market
• Develop a new way of looking at something (bringing a new idea into existence)
• Change the way someone else looks at something

In fact, we are all creative every day because we are constantly changing the ideas which we hold about the world about us. Creativity does not have to be about developing something new to the world, it is more to do with developing something new to ourselves. When we change ourselves, the world changes with us, both in the way that the world is affected by our changed actions and in the changed way that we experience the world.

Creativity can be used to make products, processes and services better and it can be used to create them in the first place. It is expected that increasing your creativity will help you, your organization and your customers become happier through improvements in your quality and quantity of output

First creative studies class

Since the lecturer didn't come when first week of Trimester 2
I have my first Creative Studies class on week 2 and I nearly miss it cause of the delay of arrival of lecturer and all of us thought that it will be not class again.

Luckily, lecturer come when my friends and I about to leave campus.
Since half of us had left the class, lecturer just give us a simple briefing about what should we do for this subject and the class end up with going back earlier.

First, we have been asking to create a blog for this subject or we may choose to use back our own current blog to update what have we learn every week.This is what I'm doing so now.And lecturer want us to form a group of five members (minimum five and maximum five,this is what the lecturer said) for our assignment one project and we may change our group when assignment 2 is given if we think there is a better group for us to join with.We need to submit our individual blog URL and group name list to the lecturer in the upcoming class.

I'm now done with the two things lecturer ask us to do and waiting for the class tomorrow.Hope that we can start the lesson of this subject officially on tomorrow.
